«People of the book”, Henning Sommerro’s commissioned work arranged for an ensemble of three musicians.
Composer and musician Henning Sommerro says that he has been fascinated by the history and culture of the Jews since he was young. And from a musical point of view, he was early amazed at how many composers and performers had Jewish roots.
Jewish literature and visual arts was also something that appealed to Henning, and therefore the newly written work “People of the book” has become a small Jewish journey from his point of view.
The play has seven movements. The texts used are from the time of Moses, Judah Halevi (1075-1141) and Nelly Sachs (1891-1970).
Through the use of images, poetry and philosophy, everyone has helped to provide inspiration for making music, says Sommerro. The lyrics are performed in English and German. – The music is inspired by Jewish culture and music, but kept in “my style”, says the composer.
