Opening of the exhibition “And God created woman”
Venue: Trondhjem Art Association / Café Ni Muser
The Jewish Festival in Trondheim presents an Art exhibition “….and God created the women”. The exhibition reviles twelve unique drawings portraying thirteen personages with remarkable character and history behind their faces.
Drawing with the pencil in simple yet very profound shades of black and white colors which in its turn brings remarkable and perhaps often hidden beauty of the soul. It is almost as the natural nakedness of an unmasked strength, the will and strong character of the woman’s identity. Pencil drawing bring up bold balance of the feminine beauty, iron will and life determination.
Biblical stories behind the personages brings viewers to familiar background and surroundings, which makes drawing recognizable and personal.
Two main graphic technics have been used for achieving the goal of the exhibition: graphic Hatching and graphic Feathering
Graphic Hatching technique is represented by Anna Rosenblum in portraying Ruth, Hulda and Serah. With the help of the harmonical strokes or short lines, the tone of the personages conveyed in unique way. Depending on the number of strokes the drawings, can reflect different levels of saturation. By the direction of the strokes, the graphic technique conveys the texture of the surface of the shape.
Another technique is known as Graphic Feathering, and it is being wonderfully portrayed by Irina Barnholtz in reviling the character of Ziphorah, Aseneth, Batjah, Jael, Rahab, Deborah, Zilpah og Bilha. Graphic Feathering is one of the basic techniques that can be applied when drawing to novice artists. With the help of tone gradation, the technique can add volume to the figure. In general, feathering is a special case of shading. After applying the strokes, using the properties of pencil graphite and a special shading tool, they are shaded (smeared) until a uniform tone is obtained.
Organically mixture of both styles is represented by Elvira Melmann in presenting Naomi and Miriam.
